Summer Trend Alert: Feminine Ruffles

Between one shoulder, off-the-shoulder, and cold shoulder trends, there have been very many different sleeve options this summer.  Not only do these styles add interest to the overall look, they often add volume in unexpected ways. Another popular summer trend, ruffles, sometimes accompanies these different sleeve options. It also adds a unique element to your outfit and creates volume. I can picture some of you cringing at the idea in being dressed in ruffles; it is an inherently feminine style. However, I believe that ruffles can be feminine, but not girly. There’s a distinct difference between the 2 adjectives. Sure, ruffles may make you look ladylike, delicate, and pretty, but they’re not going to make you look like a child if you do it right!

Take for example Exhibit A, pictured above. I fell in love with this dress as soon as I saw it in Express. I had reservations about whether the fluorescent orange color would look good on me, but it actually looked fantastic! Add that to the fact that it was 40%, and it fit like a glove. I usually don’t go for dresses that have ruffles on the bottom, just because it adds unnecessary attention to my bottom half. However, I think that the ruffles on top and bottom actually created visual balance between my top and bottom.

I got this lovely top from a mystery bag from Vetue Boutique. Love the color!

`  Here are a few of my favorites from various stores that would fit this trend (most of them are on sale or reasonably priced!).

From Ann Taylor Loft:

  1. Chambray Cutout Ruffle Shell
  2.  Floral Embroidered Ruffle Cuff Top
  3. Striped Ruffle Wrap Skirt

Forever 21

  1. Button Front Princess Crop Cami
  2. Striped Ruffle Wrap Dress
  3. Smocked Ruffle Top

Old Navy

  1. Off-the-Shoulder Ruffle-Sleeve Swing Top
  2.  Peach Off-the-Shoulder Ruffle-Sleeve Swing Top
  3. High-Neck Ruffle-Sleeve Luxe Tee

  1. Elle Pintuck Ruffle Top

  3.  LC Lauren Conrad Ruffle Cold-Shoulder Maxi Dress

New York & Company

Hopefully this gave you some outfit inspiration for the day that aren’t too “girly!” How do you feel about ruffles? Do you feel like ruffles fit with your style, and if not, what don’t you like about them? Maybe I can convert you!

Until next time…

    1. Thank you! Their store is the best. They had endless amounts of ruffles, so it was hard to choose one to write about!

  1. Until I read this, I never realized I don’t own one single clothing item with a ruffle, I think it’s about time I added this cute feature to my wardrobe. That orange dress look stunning on you by the way!
