My most exciting trip of the year has got to be when I went to Memphis with my boyfriend on his work trip. I’m a kindergarten teacher, so I just so happened to be on spring break. When he asked me if I wanted to go with him, I was beside myself with excitement. I had recently been on 2 trips to other famous cities in the U.S. (Salt Lake City and Milwaukee) for my job, and just loved every second of it. Exploring different metropolitan areas and the culture of each city was so exhilarating and fascinating to me.
So, the plan was that my boyfriend would be at work all day, and therefore I would have to occupy myself during the 4 days we were there. In the evenings, we gorged ourselves on the amazing, fattening food of Memphis…but that’s a story for another time. I splurged a lot on buying souvenirs for my family and myself, because I figured I wouldn’t be back to Memphis anytime soon.
On the last day in Memphis, I went exploring in the downtown area. I set out in search of the Arcade Restaurant for breakfast (I had something delicious with gravy and biscuits). Then I wandered around with my backpack, and I waited for several different boutiques to open. The first few that I went in were overpriced and kind of ordinary. I wandered into “Red Velvet Memphis,” and I was instantly smitten with so many things. My style is very much 1950’s inspired, and is somewhere between Audrey Hepburn chic and punk rockabilly. I ended up buying 2 great items on sale. One is this fabulous button-up blouse. It had some really amazing details, like the gold studs at the top of the collar and a fun cocktail print. The second item could be the first pair of heels that I really truly loved (I’m a boots and flats girl, plus I teach kindergarten so can’t be stepping on anybody!). They were mahogany colored Mary Jane pumps, and my dog unfortunately liked them too…he chewed them all up within the first two weeks of owning them.
Here’s a closer look at this amazing shirt and how I styled it. I paired it with red shorts from New York & Company, black heels from Apt. 9 (Kohl’s), a gold chain necklace, and gold asymmetrical star ear climbers.
