Brights for Summer!

I’m sitting outside typing this blog post in the bright sunshine. This just feels like the right time of year to wear vibrant colors and lively patterns.  When I think of bright colors, I think of my best friend that I’ve known since preschool: Ashley. She’s so fun, silly, and up for anything, and in my mind, that’s why bright colors fit her personality so well.  It’s no wonder that these colors tend to draw our eye when we go into stores.

Today I am wearing a dark magenta tunic top, denim cropped pants, black embroidered slides, and earrings with actual miniature paintings on them. The tunic top is a recent purchase from New York & Company, and the slides are SO brand from Kohl’s. On the other hand, I’ve had these cropped pants for quite awhile! It’s definitely a more casual weekend look. Here’s where I mix my brights (top, accessories) with a classic element in my wardrobe (cropped pants).

So even though we are concentrating on adding color and patterns, you still have to think about the fit of your top or dress and adjust bottoms and shoes as needed. This outfit works because the long, flowy top is balanced by the cropped pants. If I had worn the top with shorts or a mini skirt, my body would basically look like an apple on stocky legs. The cropped pants elongate my legs, which I love! The other wonderful part is that you could literally wear cropped pants with any type of shoe (sneakers, sandals, flats, wedges, heels, or loafers), and they would look equally fantastic!

Look at those long legs! Woo hoo!

Let’s talk about these earrings…

I’m going to be honest; I initially wanted to wear these earrings because I just bought them a few days ago and haven’t gotten a chance to wear them! However, the lime green really looks fabulous with this dark magenta shade of the top. A little side note about these earrings… they are made by a local Philadelphia artist, Christina Tarkoff. She has several original paintings that she turns into prints that she puts onto jewelry. Check her out here. I had the pleasure of seeing her at the Manayunk Arts Festival over the past weekend.

I wanted to pull out 2 more new-ish shirts in my closet to demonstrate how these cropped pants (and actually the earrings too) could work in the same way.

First up…my favorite shirt of the moment. It’s a kelly green floral kimono-style shirt with a tie to wrap around your waist. It’s from New York and Company again. I have tiny shoulders, so I find that these shirts balance out my small upper half and slightly larger hips.

Look how fabulously the earrings work with this shirt too! I wore a pair of nude ankle-strap heels from Apt. 9 (Kohl’s) to show how you can wear multiple types of shoes. On the right, I am wearing earrings from New York & Company, and a dandelion necklace from

Here is a shirt from the brand Flying Tomato, bought at Marshall’s. I really think it might be a dress, but it’s a too short for me! I paired this red-orange off-the-shoulder top with the cropped pants and gold wedges (Mossimo from Target).

If you have a bright, flowy dress like this, you CAN wear it over pants. I’ve been doing this look since high school, except back then I wore my dresses with bell bottoms. Oh, and SAME EARRINGS!

I hope this gave you some ideas of how to liven up your wardrobe with some color! Remember that balance in any outfit is very important for you to look your best. I will be back in a future blog post to discuss how to choose the right colors for your skin tone (it’s easier than it sounds!).

  1. Melissa, I am in love with those earrings and even more in love with the red-orange dress over jeans. I never would’ve thought of doing that but I really want to try it now. Did you get the dress recently?! Because I think I want to copy it…lol

Love the blog post and seriously can’t wait to read more!

    1. Hi Cassy,
Thank you so much for your comment! Yes, I literally just bought the dress last week at Marshall’s. They also have it in blue! The dress over pants look works best when the dress is looser fitting or flowy. Some of the other earring designs that I saw the other day at the arts festival were landscape art, a sunset, and a scene with several people. I almost bought the sunset ones!

  2. I love the green floral kimono shirt. Green is one of my favorite colors and I am always looking for a green dressy shirt. I also like the orange tomato off the shoulder shirt.
